How much does it cost to see a GP?

The fee you pay to see a doctor depends upon the following:

  • The time you spend in consultation (the longer the consult, the higher the fee. If you book a standard consultation but the consultation takes more than 20 minutes, there will be a higher fee and a higher Medicare rebate)
  • The time of the appointment (there are higher fees for after hours and weekends)
  • The service you receive (there are additional fees for procedures such as ECGs, skin excisions, iron infusions, pregnancy tests and different fees may also apply for specific types of consultations such as mental health or complex care planning)

Appointments at MGPC are no longer routinely bulk billed. 

‘Bulk Billing’ is when a doctor bills Medicare directly for the services provided to you, this allows you to have no out of pocket expenses. If you are bulk billed, the doctor or healthcare worker has accepted the Medicare rebate as full payment for the health care provided to you.

Medicare is a public health insurance scheme and provides rebates (support payments) to you when you access eligible health services, such as visiting a GP or seeing a podiatrist. The Medicare rebate for GP consultations is now less than 50% of the fee recommended by Australian national medical associations.

For the benefit of this practice's patients, MGPC and BGPC have absorbed this cost to date, however this is no longer sustainable.  This is the case for many general practice clinics across Australia in 2023.

Existing patients who hold a valid pension and concession card will mostly* be eligible for a significantly discounted fee (30%).

New patients to MGPC and BGPC who hold pension and concession cards will mostly* be eligible for the current concessional fee.

*Billing decisions are at the discretion of the treating GP

Fees

All consultations are time-based and attract a fee.  Fees are payable at the time of consultation by cash, cheque, credit card or EFTPOS.  Accounts will not be given. 

The AMA fee structure forms the basis of the billing policy and doctors charge the fees that reflect the time taken and degree of complexity in each consultation.

GPs set their own fees and some may choose to bill a higher or a lower fee.  Please do not assume that GPs will agree to lower fees (e.g. to bulk bill you) because their colleague does.  Billing decisions are made by individual GPs and not by reception.

Additional fees may be payable for procedures such as skin cancer removal, suturing, dressings, some vaccinations or infusions. Medicare offsets some of the cost for most visits, but it does not cover every type of appointment and there are gap fees for most services, including telephone or video appointments.

Please contact reception if your booking is for a work cover claim or an insurance claim so they can advise you on the costs and time needed for these appointments.

Medicare claims

This practice is equipped with TYRO and Medicare Online.  These facilities allow the clinic to directly lodge your receipt for Medicare refunds, saving you time.  Please ask reception for any information regarding these rebate options, as well as private fees.

Medicare safety net

Medicare keeps a tally of your gap fees each calendar year and once you exceed the following thresholds, you will receive a higher rebate, of up to 80% of your out of pocket/gap fees. If you link your family together, the gap fees for everyone count towards the thresholds.

Concession card holders and families eligible for Family Tax Benefit Part A: $770.30

Everyone else who is Medicare eligible: $2 414.00

DVA, Pensioners, HCC holders

DVA Gold Card holders will be bulk billed. 

Senior Pensioners, Disability Pensioners and Health Care Card Holders may be eligible for a discount fee.  Please discuss this with reception and the GP.
